How to perform CPR

Follow these steps when someone loses consciousness and is not breathing normally. Every second counts.

    1

    Check consciousness

Gently shake the shoulders and shout loudly: 'Are you okay? Can you hear me?' Check if the person responds.

    2

Call for help and check breathing

Shout loudly for help from bystanders. Gently tilt the head back and lift the chin to open the airway. Look, listen and feel for up to 10 seconds to check if the person is breathing normally.

    3

    Call 112

Call 112 immediately (or ask someone to call). Put your phone on speaker so you can follow the operator's instructions while helping.

    4

    Start chest compressions

Place the heel of your hand on the centre of the chest. Push down firmly 30 times (5-6 cm deep) at a rate of 100-120 per minute. Let the chest fully recoil each time.

    5

    Give 2 rescue breaths

Tilt the head back, lift the chin and blow air into the mouth for 1 second. Check that the chest rises. Repeat once.

    6

    Find a nearby AED

An AED (Automated External Defibrillator) drastically increases the chance of survival. Use the button below to find the nearest AED while someone else continues CPR.

    7

    Use the AED

Turn on the AED and follow the voice instructions. Attach the electrode pads to the bare chest as indicated. The device will analyse the heart rhythm and deliver a shock if needed.

    8

    Continue until help arrives

Keep alternating: 30 chest compressions and 2 rescue breaths. Only stop when emergency services take over, the person starts breathing normally again, or you are physically unable to continue.

These instructions are a guide and do not replace official first aid training. Always follow the instructions of the 112 operator.
